12.06.201212 Июнь 2012 — Poor Liza mixes Russian ballet and theatre in modern, multidisciplinary show Toronto’s two-dozen largest ethnic communities enjoy vibrant cultural scenes that don’t often spill over to reach a broader audience. Show One Productions, anchored on the GTA’s roughly 100,000-strong population of ethnic Russians, is different. Russian culture is entirely Western, so little distances it conceptually from its neighbours to the west. But a different alphabet and 70 years of isolation within the Soviet Union and its former satellite nations has left a lingering whiff of cultural separateness. Svetlana Dvoretskaya, founder of Show One, has been doing her best to bridge the gap by bringing some of her birth country’s finest performers to venues such as Roy Thomson and Koerner halls. Her latest presentation, the last for this season, is an multidisciplinary re-telling of Poor Liza, a late-18th century novel by Nikolai Karamzin that tells the tale of doomed love between a peasant girl and an aristocrat. The 70-minute show, which gets a single performance on Wednesday (June 13) at the John Bassett Theatre, mixes music, dance and video, representing the cutting edge of 21st century Russian performance art.

25.05.201225 Май 2012 — Initiative Brings Khamatova Joy and Frustration The Soviet maxim "initiative is punishable" is only half true for actress Chulpan Khamatova. The much-admired film and theater star bubbles with joy when she describes the charity she helped found and which is now one of Russia's most successful and well known. But in the same breath she speaks bitterly about the public outcry over an advertisement she participated in this spring that praised presidential candidate Vladimir Putin. "These are compromises that I am not ashamed of making," she told The Moscow Times in an interview. "It was just a scandal for the sake of a scandal. The saddest thing is that not one of those journalists who started it tried to really look at the situation fairly." But any lingering cynicism about politics, or the system which she says every citizen has participated in creating, is swept away by the positive emotion she exudes when she talks about the children she and others at Gift of Life have helped. Khamatova, 36, got into philanthropy by accident. She was asked in 2005 to host a concert to raise $200,000 for equipment for a children's cancer ward.
27.04.201227 Апрель 2012 — Russian actresses to be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize This online supplement is produced and published by Rossiyskaya Gazeta (Russia), which takes sole responsibility for the content. Two Russian actresses are set to be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for their outstanding fund-raising work for sick children. Actresses Chulpan Khamatova and Dina Korzun are about to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. As co-founders of the charity The Gift of Life in 2006, the pair help raise funds for life-saving treatments for children with life-threatening conditions. The foundation’s website points out that a large proportion of the cost of these treatments – as much as 66pc – must be paid for by families, many of whom live below the poverty line. The charity is one of Russia’s most successful fund-raising operations, raising money through concerts, exhibitions and other events. Dmitry Muratov, Novaya Gazeta editor and instigator of the nomination, said the actresses’ “selfless saving of thousands of children’s lives” made them worthy of the prize in a LiveJournal blog.
